Enhancing Passenger Flow and Security at Zayed International Airport

Zayed International Airport, previously known as Abu Dhabi International Airport, is the main airport serving the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Operated by Abu Dhabi Airports, it first opened in 1982 and has grown into a key hub for international travel in the Middle East.

In November 2023, the airport unveiled its long-anticipated Midfield Terminal, now referred to as Terminal A—a state-of-the-art facility designed to significantly increase passenger capacity and enhance the travel experience.

The Challenge

As the Midfield Terminal prepared to open its doors, security and passenger flow were two of the primary concerns. Abu Dhabi Airports needed an intuitive, modular solution that could seamlessly integrate with the terminal’s premium interior design while maintaining high-security standards – particularly in the x-ray and baggage screening areas. There was also a need for floor-friendly installations that avoided permanent damage and allowed for future layout flexibility.

In other areas such as bag drop, check-in, and the lead-up to security, traditional queuing systems were needed to guide large volumes of passengers efficiently and safely, without disrupting the terminal’s clean, modern aesthetic.

The Journey

The project was guided by a shared commitment to design excellence, operational efficiency, and security. Our team worked closely with stakeholders on the ground—via our Dubai office—to understand their exact operational needs, security standards, and design goals.

Comprehensive site assessments and detailed planning allowed us to propose tailored solutions that met both functional and visual expectations, contributing to a smooth and professional deployment ahead of the terminal’s grand opening. In particular, the installation of Advance Tensabarriers® with universal bases was a critical part of the overall passenger guidance strategy. These units were selected for their balance of accessibility and flexibility across key touchpoints like check-in and security.

Tensator® maintained open communication with the client throughout, supporting the successful rollout of all solutions ahead of the terminal’s grand opening.

The Solution

At the heart of this installation was our Tensaguide® Plus Security Gate System—a modular, customisable solution designed specifically for high-security environments such as airport screening zones. For this project, we supplied:

• Clear shatterproof MICAM acrylic panels to act as transparent barriers between airside and landside, helping prevent items from being passed around security equipment.
• An integrated locking swing gate, allowing staff to control access with ease—open when x-ray machines are active and locked when not in use.
• A semi-permanent bolt-down base system using high-strength adhesive for secure placement without any damage to floor surfaces. Ideal for terminals with premium finishes and future reconfiguration needs.

Supporting these systems was the Advance Retractable Tensabarrier®, primarily featuring our universal base. These barriers were deployed across several zones:

• At bag drop and check-in, forming clearly defined, evenly spaced lanes to support efficient processing and smooth passenger movement.
• Leading up to and surrounding and beyond the security checkpoint, offering great crowd control, guiding passengers towards x-ray screening areas and continuing the flow immediately after they exit the scanners.

The universal base used throughout offered enhanced accessibility—its low-profile design reducing trip hazards and making it easier for passengers wheeling luggage or mobility aids to navigate the queues.

The Results

Working to tight pre-opening timelines, our local team coordinated seamlessly with airport staff and contractors to install both the Tensaguide® Plus and extensive Tensabarrier® systems. The Tensaguide® panels were strategically positioned around screening zones, enhancing security and maintaining a sleek, transparent look that complemented the terminal’s high-end design. Their semi-permanent adhesive bases ensured both durability and flexibility, with little to no impact on flooring.

Meanwhile, the large-scale deployment of 889 Tensabarriers® played a pivotal role in shaping the passenger journey—streamlining movement at check-in, reducing congestion at security, and guiding passengers smoothly from entry to airside departure. Their universal bases supported efficient layout changes and allowed easy accessibility for all travellers.

Together, these systems created a visually cohesive, operationally efficient environment that supported Abu Dhabi Airport’s goals for a secure, premium, and future-ready terminal experience.
